Miranda July’s ‘No one belongs here more than you’ is full of everything.

It’s funny.

I typed “royal family” into a dream-interpretation website, but they didn’t have that in their database, so then I typed “butt” and hit “interpret” and this came back: To see yout buttocks in your dream represents your instincts and urges. It also said: To dream that your buttocks are misshapen suggests undeveloped or wounded aspects of your psyche. But my butt was shaped all right, so that let me know my psyche was developed, and the first part told me to trust my instincts, to trust my butt, the butt that trusted him.

It’s tragic.

It’s more than that.
Is it internal?
Yes, and I also got new shoes.
Oh.

And sometimes, it’s brutal.

If I have contributed anything to psychology — which is probably not the case, but still — it’s what I call information superiority. What this means is that people who know something feel superior to people who don’t know the thing they know. A journalist can put this to his advantage. I see it in myself: If someone asks me for directions and I know how to get there, I’m happily comprehensive in my answer (this works the other way around as well, if I don’t know the directions, I’ll get a feeling like ‘don’t bother me with stupid questions). This works the same way when I’m doing research: I pretend to know nothing, which enables the other party to enthusiastically tell me everything they know. There is a certain humility in being a novelist.

Having done a few interviews myself (and planning to do a lot more) I recognize the mechanism Wolfe describes. People love to think they are purveying knowledge that is uniquely theirs. I don’t mean this cynically (I don’t think Wolfe does either), this is just what humans like and are like. It’s a powerful tool, and you really can get people to talk about nearly any subject this way.
